MongoDB on PostgreSQL?
Meet DocumentDB
AWS, Microsoft, and Google are backing a new Linux Foundation project called DocumentDB. It’s a fully open-source, MongoDB-compatible database built directly on PostgreSQL.
Why now? When MongoDB switched to their restrictive SSPL license in 2018, it created vendor lock-in risks. That’s why the cloud giants are now commoditizing the popular MongoDB API on top of the trusted, truly open PostgreSQL.
Juggling MongoDB ops alongside Postgres? Those days might be numbered. This could let teams consolidate workloads, ditch vendor sprawl, and use PostgreSQL for… well, everything 🙂
Thanks to its extensibility, PostgreSQL's is slowly but surely becoming the LEGO of the database world! 👋
